Experiments on the Strength of Wrought-Iron Struts
The following experiments were made at the Pencoyd Iron Works, Pencoyd, Pa., for the purpose of determining the comparative resistance to compression of long and short struts of rolled angle, tee, beam and channel sections. The specimens were tested by four different methods: First, with flat ends, between parallel plates, to which the specimen was in no way connected. Second, with fixed ends, or ends rigidly clamped to parallel plates, the plates substantially forming flanges to the specimen under test. Third, hinged-ended, or both ends fitted to hemispherical balls and sockets, or cylindrical pins. Fourth, round-ended, or both ends fitted to balls resting on flat plates.
