Construction Project Management Dimensions in Transportation Agencies: Case Study of the US Department of Transportation
Transportation projects require unique and specific management processes, making an investigation of the particular dimensions of project management relevant to such projects necessary. The primary objectives of this study were to (1) explore the project management dimensions related to the successful delivery of transportation projects, and (2) analyze the existing project management processes of state DOTs in the US to understand current practices as well as existing weaknesses and potential future opportunities. First, by reviewing and collecting construction project management dimensions from the existing literature, 12 transportation project management dimensions were extracted. The dimensions identified were then used as a framework to collect and analyze DOTs’ publicly available manuals and guidelines. The results of this study provide insight for project managers and policymakers in the transportation industry to better understand the dimensions of construction project management required for successful transportation project delivery, existing weaknesses, and potential future opportunities for USDOTs.
