Design of the Reconstruction of the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel
The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel was recently reconstructed to become the longest highway tunnel in North America and the only tunnel shared by both highway and rail traffic. The project is located about 50 miles southeast of Anchorage in an area with little historical data that could be used to develop design criteria. This paper illustrates the development of the design criteria for the project, identifying the roles of the owner, owner's consultants and the design-build team's designers. Several examples are presented including the development of design criteria for egress/refuge, wind loading, snow loading including avalanche loading, tunnel drainage, ventilation, ice control structures and the unique traffic control system that allows joint highway and rail use of the tunnel.
