How Can Railways Be Made More Efficient In the Transportation of Freight?
In accordance with the promise made on a former occasion, I now beg leave to present some considerations upon Mr. Shinn's paper, which have occurred to me since I have had leisure to read it more carefully than was possible in the first looking over of the original proof-sheets. I shall say nothing concerning the first part of the paper. The rapid increase in the efficiency of railroads in this country has been so well stated by Mr. Shinn, and he has so thoroughly explained the means by which it has been brought about, that he has left but little for others either to glean or to controvert.
