Design of Slope Reinforcement with Small-Diameter Piles
Experimental research was performed to evaluate the use of small-diameter, structural pile elements for stabilizing slopes. Full-scale lateral load tests were performed on individual drilled and grouted pile elements, in which the piles were installed through a shear box into stable soil and then loaded by uniform lateral translation of soil. Instrumentation of the shear boxes and pile reinforcement indicated the load development along the piles and the pile response to the physically-imposed boundary conditions. The load test analysis was then conducted to evaluate an existing analysis method for its applicability to isolated, slender piles. Experimental testing results validated the lateral response analysis method for piles subject to lateral soil movement and helped to characterize the relationship between lateral soil movement and pile behavior. Using the analysis method, a new approach is described for evaluating the stability of pile-reinforced slopes considering both strength and service limit states. Allowable slope movements for reinforced slopes constitute a practical design parameter for movement sensitive structures like buried utilities, etc.
