The Equivalent Rectangle in Prestressed Concrete Design
A simple procedure is presented for selecting cross-sectional shapes and dimensions for prestressed concrete beams in a manner similar to that used for selecting structural steel shapes. The required section modulus is computed from the bending moments and from the allowable working stress in concrete. From an equation utilizing an equivalent rectangular cross section, or by use of a chart, the dimensions of the selected shape can be determined rapidly.
