Influence Factors for Microbial-Induced Calcite Precipitation in Sands
Microbial induced calcite precipitation (MICP) uses non-pathogenic urease positive bacteria to stimulate calcite precipitation in sand to improve soil engineering properties. MICP in sand involves complex bio-geo-chemical processes that make its successful application a challenge to geotechnical engineers. In this paper, MICP laboratory experiments of several Ottawa sands were performed using sporosarcina pasteurii (ATCC-6453), a urease producing bacterium, to study the influence factors affecting calcite precipitation. The influence factors considered included particle size, drainage, treatment duration and cycles, and concentration of calcium chloride and bacteria solutions. Test results indicate the delivery method for bacterial and chemical solutions, treatment cycles, and chemical concentration are the key influence factors for the bio-cementation effect.
