The $95-million effort to first widen and then replace the 1,315 ft long Fox River Bridge, in Elgin, Illinois, faced myriad obstacles, including the need to avoid causing traffic delays on a busy stretch of Interstate 90. To accomplish this goal while meeting strict construction scheduling deadlines, the project team devised a unique approach to build the new bridge’s substructure beneath the existing bridge. Using an innovative gantry system—instead of cranes on the existing bridge deck—to place beams also helped to minimize deleterious effects on traffic.
