Ground Improvement Method by Reusing Solidified Iron-and-Steel Slag
Ground improvement by the sand compaction pile (SCP) method has been applied for soft clay layers at many construction sites in Asian countries. This method needs high-quality sand, which, however, has been exhausted. Meanwhile, steel making generates masses of iron-and-steel slag as a by-product. This situation results in a simple solution in which slag is used as ground improvement material instead of exhaustible sand. Slag has the characteristics of solidification and brittleness after curing. It is important to consider changing behavior when reusing slag for ground improvement. Therefore, the present study examined the deformation behavior of improved ground using slag as an improvement material. The ground under a caisson was subjected to an inclined load-simulating backfill soil. The main feature of this study is to use a geotechnical centrifuge technique to satisfy the similarity rule. The model tests showed that slag was a viable alternative to natural sand as an improvement material.
