This paper examines the ways in which major consulting civil engineering practices automate some of their professional services in the light of analysis and design tasks. MS Excel spreadsheets and Visual C++ are two environments that help developing in-house software. Some examples are included to demonstrate the cost-efficiency achieved by tailor-made software.
