Measurement of Thermal Conductivity Dryout and SWCC Curves for Sands Using a Modified Hanging Column Device
Soil moisture, suction, and thermal conductivity are three essential soil properties to understand the behaviors of unsaturated soils. This paper presents the measurement of thermal conductivity dryout curve (TCDC) and soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) for sands using a modified hanging column device (MHCD). The device was equipped with a newly designed thermo-TDR sensor, and a KD2 Pro (TR-1) sensor, and a METER group T5x tensiometer. Two saturated sand samples were prepared in the MHCD and underwent drainage and evaporation until dry. In the drying process, moisture content, thermal conductivity, and matric suction were continuously monitored using the installed sensors. The obtained results show that the MHCD device can provide an accurate measurement of TCDCs and SWCCs for sands.
