Effect of Plastic Fines on the Undrained Behavior of Sands
This paper addresses the effect of plastic fines and their plasticity on the monotonic undrained behavior of sands. The first set of tests involved adding different amounts of kaolin to sand. It is found that, at a constant void ratio, as the clay content increases up to 30%, the undrained monotonic shear strength is decreased and the steady-state line moves downward, whereas this trend is reversed with addition of more fines. In the second set of tests, the plasticity of fines is changed by means of adding different proportion of kaolin and bentonite. It is found that, at a constant fine content, by increasing the plasticity of fines, the peak shear strength is increased.
