Much interest exists as to the earlier engineering thought and work of this country, and the records of this thought and work are not easy of access. Mr. Moncure Robinson, Hon. M. Am. Soc. C. E., who made the original examinations as to the best means for providing accommodation for the transmission of trade over the Allegheny Mountains, between the terminal points of the Pennsylvania State Canals on the eastern and western side of the mountain, has very kindly furnished the Society with copies of his reports. At the request of many Members of the Society, and by permission of Mr. Robinson, they are reprinted in the Transactions.
