Finite Element Applications to Reinforced Soil Retaining Walls — Simplistic versus Sophisticated Analyses
Reinforced soil retaining walls, with geogrid layers acting as tensile reinforcement and modular blocks as facing, are a relatively new type of structures. The complicated interactions between these structural elements and soils require a numerical procedure in order to obtain insight into its behavior. Finite element method is obviously the first choice, but it is always an issue of bow simple or how complicated should an analysis be in replicating the actual behavior: In this paper, a full-scale test is used to validate a simplistic and sophisticated finite element analyses. Different types of finite element and material models were used in the two groups of analysis. The results are presented and compared. It is shown that under static loading conditions involving wall construction, simplistic and sophisticated analyses produced close results.
