New Perspectives on Military Engagements — The Battle for Iwo Jima: How Soil Mechanics Can Influence History
The battle for Iwo Jima has been analyzed and discussed as much as any battle in history. The fighting was brutal, and the casualties were numerous on both sides. The intent of this article is not to recount the history of the battle but rather to take a close look at the island and the events leading up to the invasion from the perspective of a civil engineer. It is hoped that this perspective will shed light on why the battle played out the way it did.
