This study explores new and more convenient method and index for characterizing foamed asphalt. First, a radioactive decay model was used for foamed asphalt, and a general equation was derived by differential methods for the actual maximum expansion ratio. The independent variables of the equation were the maximum measured expansion ratio, half-life and spraying time, which can all be obtained from asphalt foaming tests. A foam energy index (FE) was then defined as the integration of the foamed asphalt's volume and its decay time, namely the area under the foamed asphalt decay curve. The expression of FE index derived via integrals was developed, which was composed of only two variables, actual maximum expansion rate and half-life. The data analysis process of three types of foaming asphalts shows that FE index is more convenient than the former indices to determine the optimum foaming parameters and can evaluate foaming characteristics of different asphalts.
