Effect of Cyclic Loading on Filtration Behaviour of Subballast Material
Filtration behaviour of subballast material was investigated in the laboratory using a new cyclic filter test apparatus. Tests were conducted on subballast-subgrade materials having a constant piping ratio of 9 and a cyclic pressure of 75–140 kPa at 2–15 Hz frequency. Results from this study showed a considerable influence of loading frequency on the filtration behaviour of subballast material. In particular, the loss of subgrade soil was observed to increase with the increase in loading frequency. This implies that subballast-subgrade interface which is stable at lower frequency may be unstable at much higher frequency typical of fast modern train. Therefore, the effect of frequency in the design of subballast material under cyclic loading needs to be considered.
