Sewer System Modeling in the District of Columbia
The MOUSE model was used to characterize the complex hydraulic behaviors including existing and potential real time controls in the District. The model was calibrated and validated for both dry and wet weather conditions. Finally, the calibrated hydraulic model was configured to evaluate long-term control alternatives including: (1) rehabilitation of pump stations and inflatable dams, (2) runoff reduction using best management practices (BMPs) including low-impact development, rooftop storage and targeted separation, (3) increased conveyance to BPWWTP for treatment, and (4) storage basins or deep tunnels. WASA is in the process of developing a Final Control Program based on the comments received from public and regulatory agency reviews.
