Numerical Aspects of Pile Group-Interaction under Lateral Loading
Assessment of pile-soil interaction under lateral loading is a subject rich in empirical content yet masked by its complexity. Numerical modeling has offered some insight into the problem, providing a sound assessment basis that removes empirical uncertainties. Such an approach using the three-dimensional, nonlinear computer program FLAC3D was undertaken to investigate lateral group effects, and is discussed here in the context of the preparatory numerical work that was initially required. In undertaking a numerical approach the importance of verification, validation and calibration cannot be overstated and is emphasized in the paper. Use of existing theory-based and observation-based information was exploited in order to develop appropriate procedures to demonstrate adequacy in this regard. The procedures highlighted the importance of specific consideration as to the model behavior of the pile-soil system components. Consideration of the modeling technique employed also proved to be important. Overall, the numerical approach proved its worthiness, demonstrating that modeling is meaningful providing adequate measures are taken to safeguard against numerical ignorance, existing information is respected, and sufficient interrogation of models is made.
