The Substitution of Electricity for Steam as a Motive Power
This paper is devoted largely to an epitome of present practice and a review of the work accomplished in America during the past decade, as was requested by the Committee in Charge of the Congress. Illustrations of some important types covered by the title of this paper are found only in Europe, and, consequently, are used. The title excludes the discussion of urban and interurban tramways; consequently, statistics regarding tramways are used only where they illustrate the possible development of steam lines. As far as possible, the figures used are the results of actual experience or of tests.
