Comparison of Bolted and Riveted Joints
A comparison is made of the behavior of bolted joints and riveted joints subjected to static and fatigue loads. The comparison is based on tests of butt joints having a tension: shear: bearing stress relationship of approximately 1.00:0.75:1.50. The fasteners were hot-driven rivets, cold-driven rivets, and high-strength bolts. Several lengths of grip were considered for each type of fastener. Also considered was a group of butt joints fastened with high strength rivets and having a tension: shear: bearing relationship of 1.00:1.26:1.83.
