Dynamic Response of Reinforced Soil Retaining Walls
This paper presents observations from experiments on models of reinforced soil retaining walls subjected to horizontal base shaking. A computer controlled hydraulically driven single degree of freedom shake table is used in these tests. The test wall is constructed in a laminar box to a size of 750 mm x 500 mm in plan and 600 mm deep. The model retaining walls are constructed using wrap-around technique. Each model is instrumented with accelerometers, soil pressure sensors and LVDTs at different locations. The response of the reinforced retaining walls with the variation in the acceleration and frequency of base shaking and surcharge loading has been monitored and discussed. Increase in surcharge pressure caused attenuation in acceleration response and decrease in facing deformations. Low frequency motions tend to produce larger deformations.
