English and American Railroads Compared
Perhaps the first thing that strikes an American engineer in railroad traveling in England is the inconvenience of the English passenger car. It should, however, be considered that this style of car suits the exclusive and retiring character of the English; and also that very long journeys, such as we are accustomed to make, are impossible in such a small island; moreover, the English do not travel nearly as much as we do, consequently the confinement in a small, locked-up compartment is not so much felt as it would be with us in our long journeys.
