Perspectives in Monitoring to Assure Water Quality Standards Attainment and Ocean Protection
Determining and assuring the attainment of ocean water quality standards require water quality monitoring of parameters indicative of the health of our ocean. Various federal, state, academic, public, and private organizations and agencies already monitor ocean water quality and marine resources for numerous indicators and measures. However, collaboration and cooperation amongst these different agencies in monitoring and assessing the health of our ocean is essential and more effective in better understanding what truly is happening in our ocean environment. Then there are further challenges that necessitate greater and continued cooperation of monitoring entities globally, due to the complexities of understanding the impacts to ocean water quality from areas not commonly covered under typical ocean monitoring programs, such as air deposition, new chemicals or pollutants, synergistic effects, nonpoint sources, and long-distance transport.
