Retrofitting Reinforced Concrete Beam-Column Joints by Hydraulic Displacement Amplification Damping System
In applications where structures are subjected to moderate earthquake or when small inter-story displacement are expected, the conventional usage of energy dissipation devices may not be suitable. In this paper, a hydraulic displacement amplification damping system (HDADS) is proposed to retrofit non-seismic reinforced concrete beam-column joints. HDADS is based on a group of hydraulic cylinders connected to fluid viscous dampers. Two 1/2 scale reinforced concrete beam-column joint specimens designed for gravity loads only and without seismic provisions were constructed. At the end of October 2006, the specimens were tested under reverse cyclic displacements at low frequencies. Based on the hysteresis responses of the specimens, performance of HDADS under repeated cyclic displacements were assessed. The experimental results indicate that HDADS is an effective and convenient energy dissipation system for the strengthening of reinforced concrete beam-column joints.
