Structural Condition Assessment of the Herbert C. Bonner Bridge in Dare County, North Carolina
The Bonner Bridge spans the Oregon Inlet from Bodie Island at the north end to Pea Island at the south end, along the Cape Hatteras National Seashore in Dare County, North Carolina (Figure 1). The structure is 12,865± feet long with one lane in each direction. The original contract for construction of the Bonner Bridge was awarded by the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to McLean Contracting Company, Baltimore, MD on February 15, 1962. Construction of the bridge was completed on April 7, 1964. The bridge is now nearing the end of its useful life and is scheduled for replacement within the next 10 years. Currently, there are two replacement options under consideration — a new 2.7 mile long bridge parallel to the existing bridge (short bridge option) and a 17.5 mile long bridge around the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge (long bridge option). Cost estimates, including beach nourishment, NC 12 bridge alternates, new intersections, etc. are 260 to 347 million dollars for the short bridge and 930 million to 1.4 billion dollars for the long bridge. Cost estimates do not include future operation and maintenance costs.
