Proposed Overhaul of Deep Foundation Provisions of the International Building Code
The deep foundation provisions of the International Building Code (IBC) are based principally on those of the Standard Building Code. These code provisions have not undergone substantial evolution since 1982. Although they have served the industry well through the years, there are a number of developments in the state of the practice which have subsequently left portions of these provisions outdated, inadequate, and in many cases stilling to innovation in a discipline that is traditionally one of the more progressive in the design and construction industry. This paper begins to address the shortcomings of the IBC from the perspectives of design engineers in an effort to bring about a constructive dialogue concerning the overhaul of these provisions. Comparison is made between the IBC, ASCE 20-96, and Eurocode7. The authors recommend that the revised code be structured similarly to Eurocode7.
