Howard Hanson Dam Emergency Interim Grout Curtain
Howard A. Hanson Dam has had a history of excessive seepage through its right abutment for pool elevations above 1155 feet. A record pool (elevation 1188.8 feet) was held in 2009. During the post flood drawdown, symptoms indicative of potential piping/internal erosion within the dam's right abutment were observed. In response to these symptoms, the Corps of Engineers moved forward with a number of interim measures to mitigate the risk of piping/internal erosion within the right abutment before the next flood season. One of these measures was a 450-foot-long, two-row grout curtain that was specifically designed to address the area of greatest concern. End of casing grouting with balanced stabilized grouts were utilized to help stabilize the abutment within a very demanding time frame.
