Punching Shear Strength of Slab-Column Connections: A Comparative Study of Different Codes
The region of a slab in the vicinity of a support could fail in shear by developing a failure surface in the form a truncated cone or pyramid. This type of failure, called `Punching Shear Failure, is usually the source of collapse of flat-plate and flat-slab structures. Punching shear failure of slab-column connections is a subject on which there are theoretical guidelines and there are wide divergences in different empirical treatments adopted by different codes. In this paper the shear strength of slab-column connections for internal columns are critically reviewed. Shear reinforcement in the slabs is not considered in the strength evaluation. The effect of various parameters, such as, ratio of side width of columns, ratio of side width of column to the effective depth of slab, concrete compressive strength, and percentage of flexural steel, on punching shear capacity are examined.
