Performance of Geogrid-Reinforced Retaining Walls at the South Carolina State Ports Authority's Wando Terminal
Three geogrid-reinforced, modular block retaining walls were constructed as part of a terminal expansion project. The largest of the three walls, designated the primary wall, is nominally 4.7 m tall and 541 m long. It was designed to withstand relatively high, live, surcharge loading (48 kPa) and Zone 2 seismic loading. Construction of the walls was completed in mid-1992. The new container storage area was completed and placed into service in 1994. Presently (mid-1999) the walls are in excellent condition with no reported performance problems. However, the walls have experienced no seismic loading and only light surcharge loads have been applied behind the top of the primary wall.
