Delta Project: Hydraulic Investigations
For many centuries the Dutch have struggled to force from the sea a boundary that would be as favorable to them as possible. In the northern part of their country they succeeded in crowning this struggle by damming the dangerous Zuiderzee. This project resulted in a better protection of that area as well as in a considerable land reclamation. In the distant future the sea will possibly be driven back even farther northward by means of closing the gaps in the north coastline, which consists of a girdle of islands (Frisian Islands). The plans relating to such a closure have not nearly matured as yet (1960).
