Prediction of Embankment Settlement from PCPT Measurements: A Case Study at Courtableau Bridge
An accurate prediction of embankment settlement on saturated fine-grained soils is crucial to the proper design of approach slabs for bridges and to the mitigation of the bump problem. The traditional method based on laboratory test, i.e. Odometer test generally tends to miss-estimate both the magnitude and time rate of consolidation settlement. Piezocone penetration test (PCPT) has the merit of providing continuous profile of soil properties and gained wide popularity. The Louisiana Transportation Research Center (LTRC) investigated the use of PCPT and dissipation tests to predict magnitude and time-rate of embankment settlement. In this study, the data obtained at Courtableau Bridge site were used to evaluate the validity of the proposed settlement prediction methods. The predicted settlement using laboratory data, Sanglerat method, and the proposed method was compared with field measurements using horizontal inclinometers.
