Forces Induced On A Large Vessel By Surge
Field measurements are presented for forces of up to 40,000 lb as induced by two predominant standing waves. The waves with 1-min and 2 1/2-min periods produced water surface slopes of up to 0.0015 in the lines of the ship USS Norton Sound (AVM-1) of 12,000 long tons. The ship was moored alongside by unusually taut lines at Port Hueneme, California, and close to a node of the shorter wave. The two waves acted simultaneously to produce only significant surge. Tight lines tend to reduce the inertial force.
The excitation in surge is defined by the product of the slope of the water surface and the weight of the ship. Restoring forces of up to 30,000 lb in surge as computed on this basis are approximately one-third greater than those measured. In no case was it considered that resonance was encountered.
