Environmental Responsive Urban Planning and Regulations in India: An Analysis
The development regulations or planning guidelines are the tools and instruments to regulate the nature, character, and design of the development in urban areas; they also influence the quality of the urban form and urban landscape, i.e. urban built and unbuilt environment. One of the primary aims of the development regulations is to attain sustainable environment conducive to the growth and development of humans in concurrence with the other species of nature. This paper advocates the need for the planning interventions and development regulations based on the carrying capacity of the urban environment which is contextual and utilize the development potentials and resources of the urban ecosystem in order to achieve the sustainable development goals. The paper further presents a balanced approach based on the assimilative capacities of the urban environment for the prevention of irreconcilable situation arising out of incidental interventions for urban development in India, thus resulting in the encroachment upon the environment and natural resource system in the country.
