Appendix No. 20. Formula for Computing Comparative Economy of Railroad Ties
In finding the comparative economy of railroad ties of different prices and durabilities, we may either suppose that they will, on giving out, be replaced by the same kind in the future indefinitely, or we may confine our comparison to the ties used at the present time. In the former case we find the present value of the sum of the advantages of an indefinite succession of one kind over another, in the latter case we find the present value of the advantage that a single tie of one kind has over another. The amount of advantage will therefore be greater in the former case than in the latter.
