Rigid Culverts under High Overfills
Progressively higher standards for highway width, alinement, gradient, and durability have been a challenge to designers of cross-drainage facilities. Relatively cheaper earthwork favors heavy earth fills with long culverts rather than bridges. Extrapolation of practice used for low-fill culverts to high-fill requirements would have indicated long barrels of great unit cost. Adaptation of the overlying earth arch to relieve culverts of part of the load promised a substantial reduction in cost. Experimental at first, this practice has been justified by more than ten years of satisfactory performance. Review of experience disclosed occasional distress, which can be obviated by more careful attention to detail. In the paper there are summarized the progressive developments in design and the findings of a field review of performance, including suggestion for furtha er development of the practice.
