The determination of forces between the vessel and the dock during berthing depends on a large number of assumptions. An empirical formula is presented that represents average practice. Formulas for mooring forces from wind and current derived from tests by the United States Navy on comparatively small vessels are given. Although data for mooring forces produced by waves are extremely meager, formulas that appear reasonable are presented. Questions are raised as to the permissible pressures against the ships' plating.
