The Cippoletti Trapezoidal Weir
The weir with complete contractions was formerly considered to be the most accurate and convenient means for measuring large quantities of water. The form commonly used has been the rectangular weir with horizontal sill and vertical sides and with three complete contractions. With this form of weir, the coefficient of discharge is not constant, but increases with the length of the weir and diminishes when the head on the sill increases. Furthermore, because of the effect of end contraction, with equal heads, the quantities discharged are not proportional to the length of sill ; and with constant sill length, the discharge does not vary proportionally to any power of the head, because of the effect of bottom contraction.
