Richmond Hill Subdivision Explosion Case Study
On the evening of November 10, 2012, a natural gas explosion occurred in the Richmond Hill subdivision on the south side of Indianapolis, Indiana, causing two deaths and extensive property damage. The source of the explosion was from one house at a central location in the neighborhood. The explosion destroyed this house as well as a neighboring home, where the two fatalities were found. The event was widely publicized and garnered national attention. At the time that this paper was written, five individuals remained in custody on various legal charges related to the incident. The Richmond Hill subdivision comprised 125 wood-framed, single family houses, 16 of which were inspected by the authors of this paper. The houses in the neighborhood were of similar construction built by a national home builder. The purpose of this paper is to share the authors’ experience in this investigative effort, with a focus on the type and extent of damage found in the homes that surrounded the explosion source.
