Upper Limit Velocity of Geyser Eruptions in Stormwater and Combined Sewer Systems
A geyser at vertical shafts in stormwater and combined sewer systems is characterized by a weak initial eruption of a mixture of gas and liquid followed by a few strong consecutive eruptions within a time frame of a few seconds. Field-scale geysers may have eruption heights exceeding 30 m and may cause operational problems and deleterious effects in these systems. The present work presents the derivation for the upper limit velocity of a gas-liquid mixture eruption at vertical shafts. The mathematical analysis shows that the maximum velocity of a gas-liquid mixture eruption is the sound speed of the gas-liquid mixture. The derived upper limit for the geyser eruption velocity is assessed using two test cases: a geyser event in a stormwater collection system in Minneapolis and our laboratory experiments. The results show that the gas-liquid mixture sound speed is a good estimator for the upper limit of the maximum geyser eruption velocity in stormwater and combined sewer systems.
