Soil desaturation is a potential solution for the mitigation of soil liquefaction. In this paper, triaxial undrained compression and extension tests were carried out on loose sand samples with degrees of saturation ranging from 88% to 100% to study the effect of degree of saturation on the stress-strain or static liquefaction behavior. The test results show that, as the degree of saturation reduces, the stress-strain behavior experiences a transition from strain-softening to strain-hardening and an improvement in the undrained peak strength. These test results demonstrate that desaturation is effective for the enhancement of static liquefaction resistance under undrained conditions.
