The Grease Problem in Sewage Treatment
Until recent years, municipalities in the United States, situated on the seacoast, have had relatively little difficulty in disposing of their sewage with scant, if any, treatment. In general, the most that was required of such municipalities was the construction of intercepting sewers (to prevent the discharge of sewage from numerous small outlets at the shore) and one or more outfall sewers extending to deep water for disposal by dilution. With increasing population and higher standard of cleanliness, it has become increasingly difficult to dispose of sewage in this manner without creating conditions objectionable to bathing, boating, fishing, and the like.
