The paper provides a review on the development of tubed concrete columns, in which the steel tube is used as the transverse reinforcement for the column. The tubed column concept was first introduced by Tomii, Sakino and the author in 1985, and proved to be very effective in preventing column shear failure and developing significant ductility. The concept was then expanded to retrofit of existing reinforced concrete columns using both welded steel tubes and FRP tubular shells. Research on new column design using FRP tubes is also discussed.
