I-78 Bridge over Schuylkill River, Industrial Drive, and RBMN Railroad, Hamburg, PA: Bridge Replacement vs. Rehabilitation of Approach Spans
The I-78 mainline bridge over Schuylkill River in Hamburg, PA, is an example of a bridge built during the 1950s. This bridge is in the need of major rehabilitation owing to the increase in truck traffic and the condition of the existing structure. Additionally, the state government also moved it to the top, in the list of structures that need rehabilitation, due to several traffic related crashes on this roadway. This paper presents the review and analysis of the approach spans for the bridge and a discussion of how the scope evolved from a rehabilitation design to a complete structural replacement design, including the technical challenges and, the steps taken to mitigate them. The paper concludes with the most economical option for the proposed structure, based on the comparative evaluation among the various structure options reviewed for this project.
