Buckling of Elastic Structures
The buckling of a slender column under an axial load and the collapse of a thin cylinder under a uniform external pressure have long been recognized to be related structural phenomena. In both cases, the structural action may be described by the common term, buckling. If the column is perfectly straight, the load on it exactly central, and the material perfectly homogeneous and elastic, when the load is increased gradually from zero, the column remains straight until the load reaches a critical value at which the column bends out suddenly.
