Subaqueous Highway Tunnels
The object of this paper is to call attention to the use of tunnels as a means of crossing rivers or bodies of water by highways, particularly when the waters are navigable, and to discuss the conditions where tunnels are most suitable and where not. The relative advantage of ferries, movable bridges, swinging draw-, bascule-, lift-, and transporter-bridges, are discussed, and a table showing the general dimensions of the principal transporter-bridges, is given.
