An investigation of earth pressure on tunnels was undertaken in Detroit, Mich., in 1930, when a number of pressure cells were installed in tunnels, shafts, and retaining walls. Goldbeck pressure cells were used, and practically all installations were in structures built in or on the plastic clay deposits typical of this and several other cities bordering on the Great Lakes.
