Sediment Prediction in the Eastern United States
Sediment discharge equations are derived for wooded, rural, urban, and severely exposed watersheds on the U.S. East Coast. The equations are used to model the impact of urbanization on sedimentation activity. The equations can be used in crude but reasonably effective modeling techniques to study some impacts of urbanization on streams and lakes. The equations confirm and quantify the existence of a two-part urban sedimentation problem: one associated with erosion of denuded areas, the other with the degradation of stream channels rendered unstable by extensive watershed changes. Two studies compare results with historical cases.
