Behavior of Concrete Pressure Pipes Installed In Concrete Cradles
Finite-element, soil-structure interaction analysis is used to calculate moments and thrusts in concrete pressure pipes installed in concrete cradles. The results show that the previously published results are incomplete for pressure pipe design and sensitive to assumptions that cannot be justified. The results of the finite-element soil-structure interaction analysis show that internal pressure produces significant bending in the wall of a pipe installed in a cradle. Although earth load on a pipe in concrete cradle can be much larger than that for the same pipe without cradle, especially for shallow cover depths, cradles can significantly reduce the bending moments in the pipe wall, and allow pipe installation in very deep covers.
