Inspection, Evaluation, and Monitoring of Suspension Bridge Cables
The assessment of the condition of the main cables of suspension bridges requires specialized techniques that have been developed over the last few decades. In the United States, the Federal Highways Administration ("FHWA") has introduced guidelines for visual inspection of fracture-critical bridge members, including suspension bridge cables. Recently, the NCHRP has published more detailed guidelines focused on the inspection and evaluation of parallel wire suspension cables. Also, over the past ten years, new acoustic monitoring technologies have been introduced that permit long-term monitoring of cables to detect breaking wires.
